BPD, Town Leaders to Host Community Discussion on Tyre Nichols
Bluffton Police Chief Joseph “Joe” Babkiewicz, officers, town officials, and members of Bluffton MLK Observance Committee are hosting an open community discussion at the Rotary Community Center, Tuesday, January 31, starting at 6 p.m.
The event will be held at the Rotary Community Center within Oscar Frazier Park (7 Recreation Court, Bluffton).
This open community discussion will provide an opportunity for people to voice their emotions and discuss how this incident affects our community.
“The murder of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, is on the hearts and minds of Americans everywhere,” Babkiewicz said. “When people hurt, people need to be heard. It’s a basic tenet of any relationship, especially the relationships which we depend on each other to feel safe.
“Unfortunately, the actions of a few in a different state can plant seeds of doubt in our own community. We invite our residents to air their emotions and ask questions about our policies in light of this incident.”
Bridgette Frazier, a town councilmember and the board chairwoman of the Bluffton MLK Observance Committee, said this discussion is deeper than police policies, it’s about human respect and dignity.
“The murder of Tyre Nichols is yet another reminder of the transformation that needs to ensue in this country. We need to have uncomfortable conversations that ultimately lead to change, healing and growth as a community.”
All are welcome and encouraged to attend Tuesday’s open community discussion.
