Third DJ’s Day of Giving Coming Feb. 24 to Honor DJ Fields
The third annual DJ’s Day of Giving is set for the 55th day of the year, a day picked in honor of the No. 55 worn by the fallen native son behind the day.
Seventeen-year-old Dwon “DJ” Fields, Jr. was shot and killed in driving home with friends on the Bluffton Parkway on March 5, 2021. Police investigations have concluded that this was a planned hit but was a tragic case of mistaken identity.
Fields was a shining star in the Bluffton High School Class of 2021, known for his smile and his giving spirit. We have established a scholarship fund in DJ’s honor, the Live Like DJ Scholarship Fund. “DJ’s Day of Giving” was started as a means to help the community that was struggling to make sense of this loss and to help build the fund into a force for good for generations to come.
The event will be similar to the first two years, with area restaurants and retail businesses donating 10 percent of their sales on Feb. 24 to the fund. There will also be a jam-packed prize giveaway as part of the event. This year, we are also working to get as many professionals involved in donating to the fund as possible, from doctors to lawyers to realtors and more.
We hope that everyone will get out on Feb. 24 to support the restaurants and businesses that take part and help us continue to build the scholarship and ensure DJ’s spirit continues to help area scholars achieve their dreams just like we know No. 55 would have.
To date, we have raised over $100,000 for the Live Like DJ Scholarship Fund. Six area high school seniors were chosen in 2022 to be part of the inaugural Live Like DJ Scholars.
The deadline to apply for this year’s scholarship, administered by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, is March 13.
