Residents will get a chance to meet the new Bluffton Police Department chief at a special event this week.

Chief of Police Joseph Babkiewicz will oversee a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Reflection Plaza on the Bluffton Police Department campus.

Bluffton Police Department constructed its Reflection Plaza to provide officers and staff a safe space to communicate and rejuvenate. This hardscape plaza, accented with outside chairs and tables, will provide department staff a place to take a respite from being hypervigilant and step away from shift/office demands. This plaza is a component in the department’s 10-tier Mental Health & Wellness Program. This program won a statewide “Achievement Award” in the Public Safety category from the Municipal Association of South Carolina in July 2022. Hargray donated $35,000 to this project.

The plaza unveiling is being held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 12 at the BPD campus at 101 Progressive Street in Buckwalter Place.

Chief Babkiewicz was sworn into this position Thursday, December 29, 2022.
