A Slice of Bluffton Then and Now, Dispatch No. 2

As part of the Lowcountry Chronicle project, we’re going to publish the posts from the Bluffton Then and Now public Facebook group in website form so they have a permanent home to live in case Zucky decides to pull the plug one day.

Here’s our latest batch of dispatches from Bluffton Then and Now. We hope you’ll join the public Facebook group to get a fuller view of the place we make our home.

One of Bluffton’s old post offices on Bridge Street

Scott’s Meat on May river Road, then and now

“Marsh on the May” store on Bounadry Street: Private residence for many, many years versus today

Bluffton’s first public library on the corner of Boundary and Lawton. Today it’s the location of the pavilion at DuBois Park.

The mainstay of May River Road, the famous Squat N Gobble.

Calhoun Street circa 1920, from Bridge Street looking towards the river. You can faintly make out the Methodist church on the left.

Across from Nickel Pumpers once sat Val and Jim’s BBQ named after Mr. Joiner’s children. Unfortunately all has been torn down now but most can remember that little shack that sat for so long.

Old aerial view of Michael C. Riley High School located on Goethe Roadd versus the ballpark and covered basketball court today.
